Abstract: The study delved into workers training programmes in ntwo university libraries in Nigeria. Possessing of essential skills is fundamental to optimum performance of workers in any organisations including libraries and library support staff in university libraries. Three objectives guided the study which were to: identify factors responsible for human resources development programmes; examine the various programmes for human resource development in the two libraries selected; and find out if the human resources development programme in the library can be used to solve the problem of manpower deficiency as currently witnessed in the two institutions. Literature that are germaine to the study were properly reviewed. Survey research design was adopted. Total enumeration (census) was used to select the entire librarians and library support staff of River state university of science and technology, 43 and university of portharcourt 49, making a total of 92 staff altogether. Data presented were analysed with simple statistical tools of tables, and frequency counts. Part of the findings were that the two institutions have various manpower development programmes. It was recommended that the training programmes available should be revised to cater for all areas like marketing library services, labour and management relations, and employee and employer rights.
