Abstract: The paper presents classification of Nigerian subsoil bases. Numerous subsoil investigation reports from across the country were collected, studied and analyzed. The study laid much emphasis on the numbers of soil strata and the variation of their bearing capacities and settlement characteristics in relation to the types of foundations recommended in each of the reports. Based on the study and depending on the complexity of the soil strata, subsoil bases in Nigeria were grouped into three: Simple, Less Complex and Complex
