One major problem with wood thermoplastic composites is the inherent incompatibility between the polar wood and the non polar matrix. To checkmate this shortcoming, maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) was employed as coupling agent in the compounding of Red Balau sawdust with low density polyethylene (LDPE). Tensile and flexural tests were conducted to assess the effects of MAPE content on the mechanical properties of the composites. Result revealed that MAPE enhances the properties of LDPE/Red Balau sawdust composites as better interfacial adhesion was achieved. Therefore, this presents a way of extending the applications of LDPE beyond its traditional uses.en_US
