Abstract: ABSTRACT ThisstudycarriedoutperformancetestingonresponsetimeofGreenstoneandDSpacesoftwareinhandlingrich textdatainFederalUniversityofTechnology,Minna,Nigeria.Richtextdataaredatathatcontainsacombination oftexts,tables,symbolsandmanyothertextstructures.Thestudysoughttoachievetwoobjectivesandtwo correspondingresearchquestionswereformulated.Aweb-experimentaldesignwasadoptedforthestudywhilea ParticipantObservationTemplate(POT)servedastheinstrumentforrecordingusers’observationsforresponse timeofrelevantdataretrieved.Outofthe54studentstargeted,only35attendedthetraininghence35copiesofthe POTweredistributedtoanintactclassoftrained500levelstudentsintheDepartmentofLibraryandInformation Technology,FederalUniversityofTechnologyMinna,Nigeria.34copieswerereturnedandonly33werefound usablerepresenting97.14%responserate.Thedatacollectedwerepresentedintablesandgraphsandanalysed usingmeanandstandarddeviation,whilethehypothesiswastestedusingt-teststatisticat0.05levelofsignificance. FindingsofthestudyrevealedthatthemeanresponsetimeofGreenstonewasfasterthanDSpacesoftwareby0.01s inhandlingrichtextdatabutthedifferencewasnotstatisticallysignificant.
