Abstract: The use of new materials in civil engineering calls for a concerted effort to get precise and accurate solutions. It is obvious that deterministic values are not reliable and its use to design civil engineering structures can cause instant failure. The use of the theory of probability to determine the most reliable value for a parameter for design of civil engineering structures is very pertinent. This work set out to review the literatures on the application of the theory of probability and its related uses in civil engineering.
