Item Disinformation, Fake News, and the prolonged Academic Staff union of Universities strike: The Nigerian Universities’ story(2024) F.J. Abduldayan; S.O. Abu; R.S. Chuks-IbeInformation literacy skill is essential for everyone especially at this age of information overload where it is often difficult to sieve the truth out of the numerous information dissemination channels available on the Internet. Librarians and libraries are at the forefront of ensuring that only should accurate, timely, and reliable information is offered to their users. However, the scourge of disinformation and fake news has created a huge gap which libraries and librarians are expected to fill. The study examined the impact of disinformation and fake news on the prolonged Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike in Nigerian universities. Secondary data was gathered from the report by ASUU National executives and Government officials from the Ministry of Education and Labour at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Also, reactions from Nigerian students to some of the information on the Internet was mined from Twitter. Content and thematic analysis was done on the gathered data using the Braun & Clarke thematic analysis approach. The findings of the study provided a framework that can be adopted to fill information and communication gap between the university union, the government, and Nigerian students in order to limit the effect of disinformation and fake news on the public and the Nation at large. Also, the result of the study showed the reports from Government officials, Academic Staff Union of University and students’ perspectives. The study recommended that libraries should have official social media handle where current information be disseminated regularly.Item CHALLENGES OF RENTAL HOUSING AFFORDABILITY BY TEACHERS IN MINNA, NIGER STATE, NIGERIA.(International Anatolian Scientific Research Congress, Kayseri – Turkey, 2022) Falilat Abdulmalik; Rukaiyat Ogunbajo; Sekinat AbdulkareemAffordable housing has become a serious and considerable challenge especially for low incomes households which resulted from continue growth and expansion of the urban centre. There has been a serious threat to rental accommodation in the urban areas especially to certain grade of workers whose income in most cases are based on their salaries. The challenge becomes not only to provide the houses but to make the houses affordable to the average Nigerian worker. The study examined the challenges of rental housing affordability by teachers in Minna, Niger state, Nigeria. Data were collected from 927 teachers between grade levels 07-17 in 20 purposively selected public secondary schools within Minna metropolis. Information were obtained on the annual income, property rental value and challenges of rental housing affordability by teachers in the study area. Appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in analyzing data collected. The study revealed that there was a positive significant correlation between annual income and property rental value of the teachers, which implies that as long as there is increase in annual income of teachers, property rental value of teachers in the study area will increase. Lastly, high cost of building materials among others is the strongest predictor of rental value and thus a key contributor to explaining the level of rental housing affordability of teachers in the study area. Among other recommendations to reduce the rental values of properties occupied by teachers in the study area, government should implement existing staff housing programme. While implementing this programme, various income groups should be put into consideration. Emphasis should also be placed on low and medium housing units specific for teachers. This will reduce the housing cost thus making it more affordable to many teachers.Item Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Nigerian economy(Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce, 2020) Nurudeen Abu; Musa Abdullahi SakankoThis study employs the ARDL estimation method to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Nigeria’s stock market using daily data from 23rd March to 29th May 2020. The results of the bounds test to cointegration indicate that a long-run relationship exist between the COVID-19 outbreak and stock market performance. The estimation results demonstrate that COVID-19 (proxied by the number of confirmed cases of infection, the number of deaths and lockdown) has a negative impact on stock market performance in the long-run and the short-run. The results of the stability test reveal that the relationship between COVID-19 pandemic and stock market is stable over the long-run. The study recommends policies to reduce the spread of the virus to lessen its negative impact on the stock market in Nigeria.Item Financial Inclusion: A Panacea for National Development in Nigeria(Faculty of Social Sciences, Federal University of Lafia, 2019) Musa Abdullahi Sakanko; Nurudeen AbuDevelopment is a key factor in every society, although, the understanding of the concept differs from society to society. That is, each society has ways of developing itself passing through the necessary developmental stages. The success of these stages is a function of many key policies, programmes, and initiatives. The study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing technique to empirically examine the effect of financial inclusion on national development in Nigeria from 1980 to 2018. The empirical result indicates the existence of Co-integration (long-run) relationship between national development (proxy by Human Development Index-HDI) and financial inclusion (measured by access to financial institutions, access to ATM facilities, access to credit, and the credit to the private sector). In addition, the result demonstrates the presence of statistically significant positive impact of access a bank, ATM facilities, and credit on national development, as well as the existence of significant negative impact of credit to the prive sector on national development in the long run. Equally, in the short run, it was discovered that, while access to the bank in the current and previous year, and the access to ATM facilities in the past year impact on national development positively. In essence, while these entails the tendency of improved level of financial inclusion enhancing national development, policy makers are therefore recommended to put in place strategies which will further enhance the level of financial inclusion in the countryItem Factors Influencing the use of Information and Communication Technology in Real Estate Practice in Minna(Faculty of Environmental Technology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Nigeria, 2015) Adeyemo Afeez Adewunmi; Kemiki Olurotimi Adebowale; Adama Unekwu Jonathan; Ayoola Adeyosoye BabatundeThe study explored motivating factors influencing the use of ICT in Minna. The target population were registered Estate Surveyors and Valuers domiciled and operating within the Minna property market. The respondents were extracted from the 2011 NIESV membership Directory. Survey data from 15 estate firms were collected to analyze the vital motivating factors influencing the use of ICT in real estate practice. A five point Likert scale was used to examine their opinions and spearman rank correlation was used to test if there is any relationship between internal and external motivating factors. The result indicated that increased productivity of staff, enhanced quality of customer services, knowledge sharing factor, information accessibility, improved decision making and time saving are the most influencing motivating factors while competitors' pressure, availability of ICT infrastructure, management and business size, reduced overall cost are less influencing motivating factors. The study further revealed that internal motivating factors strengthened the use of ICT in their domain. There is negative correlation between the internal and external motivating factors. Niger state branch of NIESV and ESVARBON should recommend the use of ICT to all estate firms and estate surveyors and valuers. Also, the work concludes by recommending further conduct of comprehensive indigenous research and development (R&D) in ICT driven real estate practice in Minna by liaison with various educational institutions offering estate management in their domain in order to be abreast of global best practices.Item Appraisal of the Housing Delivery Mandate of Selected Government Agencies in Nigeria(Environmental Technology & Science Journal, 2021-12-19) Oyewobi L,; Agoi O,; Medayese S.O.; Bilau A.; Martins V; Jimoh RIn spite the concerted efforts made by housing stakeholders in formulating and implementing the 2012 National Housing Policy to bridge the gap between housing demand and supply, the housing situation remains in crisis and hampering on existing policies, sustainable housing delivery with consequent socio-economic, environmental, and political implications. These challenges call for an appraisal of the 2012 National housing policy towards identifying effective mechanism for the policy’s implementation. This paper assessed the roles of the housing policy’s implementing agencies (Federal Housing Authority and Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria), identify the challenges faced by the agencies and provide strategies for effective implementation of the National housing policy in Nigeria. In conducting this study, a mixed methods approach was adopted. The study identified the roles played by the designated agencies towards ensuring effective implementation of the National housing policy to include facilitating the development and management of real estate across all states, provision of sites and services for all income groups. Some of the major challenges found to be affecting the provision of adequate housing include increasing cost of procuring land and building materials, poorly developed mortgage finance system and high interest rates on mortgages and cumbersome building plans approvals processes. Though the agencies made concerted efforts in living up to their responsibilities, the efforts are not enough as housing deficit continues to increase. It is therefore suggested that all the tiers of government should ensure the provision of adequate infrastructure and appropriate land titles for both implementing agencies and private firms, create enabling environment for private sector participation in long-term housing finance and encourage the use of indigenous and alternative building materials to reduce construction cost.Item Exploring the perception of Nigerians towards nuclear power generation(Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2021-07-07) Daniel R.E. Oyakhire; Zhongile HuanTo decarbonize the Nigerian power sector and ensure a reliable electricity supply, nuclear power will play a key role. However, public acceptance must be considered for the successful introduction of nuclear power. This study examines the perceptions of Nigerians towards nuclear power generation and its opportunity as a viable source of power in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative method through surveys, using simple random sampling by administering questionnaires of structured close-ended questions to 10,001 respondents via social networking services and handdelivered questionnaires. However, the response rate was only 71%. The data were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation to measure the relationship between the various perceptions of nuclear power as a viable solution to the electricity problems in Nigeria using the statistical analysis software, Statistical Product and Service Solutions Statistics (IBM SPSS). The Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.821 of the items (questions) illustrates the acceptable internal consistency of the study and shows that it has reliability and validity on a five-point Likert scale. The study shows that over 56% of the respondents support the use of nuclear power generation as a viable option for electricity supply in Nigeria. A total of 102 respondents were randomly selected from four wards in the study area using a multi stage sampling procedure. Primary data were collected using well-structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics (such as frequency distribution, percentage, and mean), and Likert Scale Entrepreneurs in the study area were engaged in selling food stuffs with average entrepreneurial experience of 6years with average monthly income and savings of N39190 and N26759 respectively. Majority(40.2%) invested within N101000 - N200000 in their businesses.Item Towards a Reliable Metadata: Enhancing Data Integrity of Institutional Repositories in the Era of Information Explosion in Nigeria(DC Paper, 2024) Jeremiah Agada Enenche.; Samuel Jimmy Udoudoh.; Abduldayan, F. J.; Ogochukwu T. EmiriAmid Nigeria's information explosion, institutional repositories stand as crucial infrastructures for managing and preserving scholarly output. This study explores metadata integrity within Nigerian institutional repositories amidst challenges such as inconsistent standards, accuracy issues, and the lack of quality control. Through an investigative approach utilising data from OpenDOAR, the study identifies 23 institutional repositories out of the 265 NUC-approved universities in Nigeria, highlighting a low adoption rate of repositories. DSpace emerges as the predominant repository software of choice (87.5%), with journal articles being the most common content type. The study recommended increased adoption of institutional repositories in Nigeria, standardization, enhanced metadata practices, and continuous evaluation. Implementation of these recommendations can bolster repository efficacy, uniform metadata schema, better interoperability, and visibility, and enhance research impact nationally and internationally.Item Top Cited Articles on Structural Engineering Reliability by the Nigerian Authors(USEP: Journal of Research Information in Civil Engineering, 2020) Abubakar, Mahmud; Aguwa, J. I.; Abdullahi, M.; Sadiku, S.; Oritola, S. F.This study analyses the characteristics of top-cited articles on structural reliability with at least one author affiliated to Nigeria. A search in the Google Scholar database for articles published between 2010 and 2020 was carried out. From the top-cited articles, variables related to the journal, article, and authors, such as journal ranking from SCImago Journals & Country Rank (SJR), H-index, author affiliations, international research collaboration, and source of funding were collected and descriptively analysed. A sample of 25 original reports was identified from the search. The average citations per year ranged between 0.10 and 6.1. The articles were published in 20 different journals (36% found in only four journals) with five of them based in Nigeria. It was observed, that international collaboration on reliability-based researches was present in 4% of the articles, and funding was reported in just 1 article. Articles having Nigerians as first authors were reported in 100% of the articles. Articles with authors affiliated to ABU, Zaria were more frequent in the sample. A list of top-cited articles is thus, presented to provide an overview of the top-cited articles. This study could aid in supporting further analyses regarding publication, citation behaviours, research funding and international collaboration of structural reliability based researches in Nigeria.
