    Entrepreneurial and Functional Building Technology Education as a Means of Achieving Vision 2020 in Nigeria

    Entrepreneurial and functional building technology education, if well positioned has the potentials of launching Nigeria into the first 20 world economies by the year 2020. This paper integrates the industrial, educational and entrepreneurial activities that results in increased productivity. Functional building technology career broadly categorised into professional and non-professional. The paper reviewed the entrepreneurial prospects open to the non-professional builders trained in the technical institutions equipped with the knowledge and skills to competently perform in the building construction sites as craftsmen, technicians and technologist. Also, other entrepreneurial activities in the public and private sectors at both small and medium scale capacity. The review presented inadequate budgetary allocation to the education sector, dearth of infrastructural facilities, also, the gap existing between the construction industry and the technical institutions. It recommended, increased funding and acquisition of modern equipment/machine and adequate infrastructural facilities. Also, establish a sustainable linkage between the construction industry and technical institutions. Implementation of these will result in increased productivity, robust economy and actualization of the nation’s vision 2020.

    Architect’s and Geology’s View on the Causes of Building Failures in Nigeria

    The collapse of building in most cases is associated with loss of life and properties. The incessant failures of building nowadays are so enormous that it has become a serious concern to the professionals in the building industry, clients, governments, and the general public. Most of the times, the architect and engineer who are directly involved in the construction of such building are held responsible for building failures while the geologist's input is neglected. The frequent collapse of some buildings in major cities in Nigeria can be attributed to absence of a geotechnical report on the project site before, during and after the construction exercise. Studies have shown that geotechnical investigation report of a four storey residential building covering 420 m 2 at No. 56 Bola Street, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, that collapsed on 26 th July, 2006 was as a result of the existence of reddish brown silty clayey material and compressible waste material like wood, plastic and nylon occurring from ground surface to about 11 m on which a shallow strip foundation was used. More so, on 1 st July, 2006, another 3- Storey building collapsed along Bank road, Port-Harcourt. The result of the liquid limit, plasticity index, shrinkage potential, moisture content, tri-axial stress range and coefficient of consolidation carried out on the two locations indicates that the soil have low bearing capacity. The collapsed of these buildings were attributed to under design, improper supervision, poor quality construction, poor funding, use of sub-standard construction materials and absence of geo-technical investigation and engagement of non-professionals (quacks). This paper therefore x-rays the causes of building failures in Nigeria and discusses how the solutions to natural and man-made factors can be integrated in order to mitigate or ameliorate future building collapse in Nigeria.

    Instructional Supervisory Strategies and Quality Assurance for Technology Education Teachers in Nigeria

    The quality of education at any level cannot be divorced from the quality of teachers in the educational system. The paper advocates that attention and priority for instructional supervisory strategies in training and retraining of teachers is essential to make reasonable and sustainable impact in teaching of students. Some of the strategies include; target setting, team training and organizational diagnosis among others. It is recommended that the government should ensure better condition of service for technical teachers in order to enhance their commitment to the job and improved funding for in service training of technical teachers thereby actualizing quality assurance in technical education system.

    ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MANAGERS OF TECHNICAL COLLEGE WORKSHOPS: A CASE OF NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA

    This study assesses the effectiveness of managers of technical college workshops from the perspective of stakeholders in North Central Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed. Three research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A 35-item questionnaire developed by the researchers and validated by three experts was used to collect data from 101 administrators, 140 teachers, and 24 workshop personnel randomly sampled and stratified along trades in technical colleges. Mean was employed to answer the research questions while one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to test the hypotheses using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for data analysis. Result revealed that respondent shared similar opinions on the management of technical college workshops. It was therefore recommended that: The managers of the workshops should use alternative approaches in the management of workshop instead of waiting for government to provide everything; maintenance of tools should be a regular practice in the workshops; administrators should recommend teachers and workshop personnel to attend seminars regularly in order to update their knowledge on current practices in the management of technical college workshops among others

    Influence of cognitive styles on technical drawing students’ achievements in senior secondary school in Federal Capital Territory [FCT] Abuja

    There are different cognitive strategies for processing information which in turn influence students’ academic achievement. This paper reports an investigation of cognitive styles and achievement scores of secondary school students. In the study, the standardised Group Embedded Figures Test was used to determine the influence of student’s cognitive styles on Technical Drawing students’ achievement in Senior Secondary Schools in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. A research question and null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The design of the study was a causal comparative or (expost-facto) design. The sample for the study consisted of 87 Senior Secondary School Two (SSSII) Technical Drawing students drawn from the three sampled schools in three Area Councils of FCT. The students were categorized into three groups based on Group embedded figure test (GEFT). The instrument used for data collection was Technical Drawing Achievement test (TDAT). The instrument was face and content validated by three Technical Drawing Lecturers and two experts in Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability coefficient of Basic Electricity Achievement Test (BEAT) was established using Kuder- Richardson formula 20 (K-R20) and this yielded an index of 0.69. Data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results of the study revealed that cognitive style significantly influenced students’ achievements in Technical Drawing. Recommendations made among others were that students’ cognitive styles be adopted for effective teaching of Technical Drawing in Secondary Schools

    Leveraging on University’s Electronic Mailing System for Effective Provision of Selective Dissemination of Information in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library, FUT Minna, Niger State

    This research is on the use of university’s emailing system in the provision of effective selective dissemination of information in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida library, Federal University of Technology, Minna. Emailing system is a technology that can be deployed on any mobile technologies especially mobile smart phones, tablets, and other handheld devices. Preliminary investigations revealed uncertainty on the rate of use of mobile technology in providing SDI in the university library neither is there a comprehensive database captured for such purpose. As a result, this research is aimed at studying the level of awareness the provision of SDI has attained in the university, the presence of mobile technology infrastructure put in place, hindrances to provision of this service via mobile technology and necessary steps to curb the stated hindrances and challenges. A survey research design was adopted in the study and the target population were the academic researchers and librarians who were administered questionnaires and interviewed respectively. A total of 755 copies of questionnaire were administered; 389 copies were returned and found usable. The collected data was analyzed and presented using simple percentages and frequency counts whereby the responses were made across different ranks in the academic cadre and two librarians were interviewed. Findings revealed that lack of constant internet data bundle and mobile access to emails hindered effective access to SDI on the part of researchers, while librarians were faced with several delays due to bureaucratic processes for considering submitted reports as well as funding of internal projects and network downtime challenges on the part of library administrators. The study recommended that the school should improve SDI awareness among researchers through HOD’s and Deans of Schools especially during board meetings, and adopting an automated SDI system supported with a clear-cut policy for SDI provision in the university.

    Development of a Library Circulation System for the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library, Federal University of Technology Minna using Java and MySQL

    This study is focused on the design and implementation of a monitoring-based library circulation system: a case study of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library (IBBL), Federal University of Technology Minna. It has been observed that library users borrow books and fail to return them thereby leading to loss of such library materials which might be sometimes expensive and almost impossible to replace. There is therefore the need for developing an automated monitoring-based library circulation system that will remind library users of due date for return of books and also award fines as appropriate. The study adopted the system analysis and design method and used Java programming language and MySQL to develop the front-end and back-end of the system respectively. The study recommended that the university library management should encourage the use of the monitoring-based system for improved circulation system and enhanced service delivery.

    Effects of Reprography and Use of Electronic Resources on Book Buying by Students of Tertiary Institutions in Niger State

    This study examined effects of reprography and use of e-resources on book buying by students in selected tertiary institutions in Niger state. The objectives of the study were to determine: the rate of other means of reproducing work on book trade, the benefits of using e-resources, challenges of book trade in Niger state and to find out the rate of using e-resources by the students of tertiary institutions in Niger state. Descriptive survey was used for the study in three selected tertiary institutions in Niger state, these were Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, Federal Polytechnic, Bida and Federal College of Education, Kontagora. The population of the study consisted of students of the institutions which was 23,061. 300 respondents were sampled using Simple random technique, that is, 100 respondents from each institution. Structured questionnaires were used to gather data while data collected was analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages. Findings revealed that the respondents photocopy book materials and also make use of electronic resources when searching for information, but that majority of the respondents do not buy books. The study recommends that students should cultivate the culture of buying books, rather than photocopying so as to uphold both the standard and professional excellence in higher institutions. The study recommended that electronic information resources should be made available and students should effectively utilize the needed.

Social Media became popular after the advent of Web 2.0; a web technology that enhances and promotes great interaction among user and since then, it has continued to evolve. There have been changes and expansion in its uses as well as its applications. These include text, audio, video, images, podcast and other multimedia communications.
