A.; Okoye, N.OThe collapse of building in most cases is associated with loss of life and properties. The incessant failures of building nowadays are so enormous that it has become a serious concern to the professionals in the building industry, clients, governments, and the general public. Most of the times, the architect and engineer who are directly involved in the construction of such building are held responsible for building failures while the geologist's input is neglected. The frequent collapse of some buildings in major cities in Nigeria can be attributed to absence of a geotechnical report on the project site before, during and after the construction exercise. Studies have shown that geotechnical investigation report of a four storey residential building covering 420 m 2 at No. 56 Bola Street, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, that collapsed on 26 th July, 2006 was as a result of the existence of reddish brown silty clayey material and compressible waste material like wood, plastic and nylon occurring from ground surface to about 11 m on which a shallow strip foundation was used. More so, on 1 st July, 2006, another 3- Storey building collapsed along Bank road, Port-Harcourt. The result of the liquid limit, plasticity index, shrinkage potential, moisture content, tri-axial stress range and coefficient of consolidation carried out on the two locations indicates that the soil have low bearing capacity. The collapsed of these buildings were attributed to under design, improper supervision, poor quality construction, poor funding, use of sub-standard construction materials and absence of geo-technical investigation and engagement of non-professionals (quacks). This paper therefore x-rays the causes of building failures in Nigeria and discusses how the solutions to natural and man-made factors can be integrated in order to mitigate or ameliorate future building collapse in Nigeria.Item Instructional Supervisory Strategies and Quality Assurance for Technology Education Teachers in Nigeria(International Journal of Scientific Research, 2012) Igwe, C.O.; Ohize, E.J.; Atsumbe, B.N.; Onoh, C.E.C; Ibeneme, O.T.The quality of education at any level cannot be divorced from the quality of teachers in the educational system. Legbo; Adeyemi R. Ikuesan; Shaka A. Imavah; Abdullahi B. Mohammad; Fatimah J. Abduldayan; Meshach BabaTechnology-assisted living is a growing trend in most developing nations, particularly for young-aged demographic countries, as it presents a platform for personal development and knowledge management. However, this societyscaping trend has also introduced the myriad opportunity for the formation of complex crime, which is often beyond the (immediate) capability of the policing entity in developing nations. To address this lingering and futuristic problem, particularly in Nigeria, this study developed a context-based digital policing framework for the enhancement of the Nigerian Police. This Nigerian-context framework presents the viability and relevance of the digital policing mechanism in addressing challenges ravaging society. Furthermore, it also presents a modality for improving and enhancing the policing apparatus of the Nigerian society, as a model for other developing nations. The knowledge from the Nigerian-context of digital policing has both research and societal implications. In terms of research, it opens the community of security researchers into the contextual characteristics of digital policing as well as the probable research direction required to implement digital policing in developing nations. With respect to society, knowledge provides a substratum for the integration of the community-policing model.Item Funding as Correlates of Library Service Delivery for Students with Special Needs in North Central Nigeria(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2020) Madu, E. C.; Gomna, M. A.; Omame, I. M.; Abduldayan, F.J.This paper assessed funding as correlates of library service delivery in schools which have students with special needs in North central, Nigeria. The study was guided by three objectives and three corresponding research questions. Survey research design method was adopted for the study. The total population for the study was three hundred and nine (309) secondary school students in the three schools which have students with special needs. A total of two hundred and forty six (246) copies of questionnaire were filled, returned and found usable for the analysis representing 80% response rate. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Descriptive statistical such as frequency counts and percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data. The results from the findings showed that the major sources of funding for special needs schools under study are: Subvention from State Government, NonGovernmental Organisation (NGOs) and Religious Group. In addition, the major services offered by these libraries are circulation services, document delivery services and reference services. The analysis of the findings further revealed that lack of fund to procure library resources is one of the major problems affecting effective service delivery among the libraries under study. Hence, the study recommended among others that the management of special needs schools should look of alternative means of funding for the acquisition of information resources in their libraries to enable them meet the information needs of the users with special needs.Item Populating Institutional Repositories in Nigeria using Research Data: Challenges and prospects(A paper presented at the Hybrid Conference of Authors, Researchers, Editors, and Scholars (COARES 2020), 2020) Abduldayan, F.J.Item Evaluation of the implementation of procurement planning in the award of building contracts in Federal Universities in North Central Nigeria(Benue State University Journal of Education (BSUJE), 2020) Agonsi, R. A; Usman, A. A; Abduldayan, F.J.This study is on public libraries’ roles in helping achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Poverty Eradication in Nigeria. Poverty has long been a challenge that has faced humanity as many struggle to make ends meet and get a decent living for themselves. We live in an ‘Information Age’ where people equipped with the right information are able to make better decisions and better their lives. Public libraries exist as an information household that can provide people with the right information to better their status and quality of life as a whole. This study identified the demographic characteristics of public library users in Nigeria, investigated the level of awareness of public libraries, the frequency of use of the library, identified the reasons for visiting public libraries, the types of resources and services that users consult, and finally, suggested strategies that could be employed by public libraries in achieving the SDG goals on poverty eradication in Nigeria. A survey was carried out using online Google Forms as the data collection instrument. Questions were generated in line with the research objectives and a link to the form was shared on social media with 238 young adult Nigerians from 25 selected states across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Findings revealed that 54.9% of male students that fall within the age range of 15-25 years from tertiary institutions form the highest number of public library users in Nigeria. Despite half of the respondents being aware of public libraries, the majority do not visit, with only a small percentage visiting on a daily basis. Borrowing books and other information materials as well as studying are the main reasons for visiting public libraries in Nigeria. The study recommended the importance of increasing awareness of public libraries, and partnership and collaboration with other libraries and organisations in rolling out programs on poverty eradication for youths.
