Item A Comparative Evaluation of the Networks of Three Nigerian Federal Universities for Effective Library Services(Ghana Library Journal, Ghana, 2013) Abduldayan, F.J.; Oluwade, B.; Oyedum, G.U.This paper is a comparative evaluation of the networks of three Nigerian federal universities and how such networks can be used to enhance library services. The university networks included in this study are the Federal University of Technology Minna Network (FUTMINNet), University of Jos Network (UNIJOSNet) and University of Lagos Network (UNILAGNet). University of Minna (FUTMIN), established in the 1980s, belongs to the third generation of Nigerian universities; University of Jos (UNIJOS) (established in the 1970s) belongs to the second generation, while University of Lagos (UNILAG) (which was established in the 1960s) belongs to the first generation. Both FUTMIN and UNIJOS are located in North Central geo-political zone of Nigeria while UNILAG is located in the South West zone. The research design employed was the survey method (involving the use of questionnaire, interview, and direct observation) to study the wired and wireless connectivity of the networks of the three universities and compare them against criteria such as network speed, bandwidth, latency, and user response. Structured and semi-structured questionnaires were administered to the network users of each of the three universities, giving a total of 300 questionnaires for the study. The result of the study shows that UNIJOSNet is the fastest while in terms of the wired service, UNILAGNet is the fastest. FUTMINNet is not performing well compared with the UNIJOSNet and UNILAGNet, or not satisfying its users at a satisfactory level. Wireless services of UNIJOSNet and UNILAGNet, which in turn affects the quality of library services offered to users. Wireless services of FUTMINNet do not adequately meet the expectations of users of library services. The paper recommends that the library network services of UNILAGNet has the best performance, while FUTMINNet needs the most improvement. Finally, universities need to enhance their wireless networks by upgrading and expanding the network components and infrastructures of all the networks, especially FUTMINNet.Item Human capital development in Technical Vocational Education [TVE] for sustainable national development(Journal of Education and Practice, 2013) Audu, R.; Igwe, C.O.; Onoh, C.E.CThe globalization process, knowledge economy, and the emergence of new modes of production in the industries in the 21st century has brought about new challenges for the developing economies and their labor markets. However, there is a clear indication now that human skills plays an important role in sustaining the current pace of growth and development through enhanced productivity of human capital. The paper discussed extensively on human capital development in TVE for sustainable national development in Nigeria. The paper also stressed on the concept of TVE and role of TVE human capital development for sustainable national development in Nigeria. The paper concludes that TVE institutions at all levels should be well equipped with good infrastructures, workshop facilities as well as employing qualified teachers to enable the graduates of the program to acquire the required skills for gainful employment in order for them to contribute to the development of their society and the nation at large.Item Education and Sustainable Development: Challenges and Prospects of Technology Education in Nation Building(African Education Indices, 2013) Igwe, C.O.The sustainable development of a nation depends largely on the level of the citizens' participation in technology education and ability to use that technology in transforming its environment. The 7-point agenda of Yar'Adua's administration is geared towards a better life for Nigerians and having a strong and self-reliant nation with a dynamic economy that can compete globally. Education and training remain the universally acclaimed keys that unlock every" other sector for sustainable national development. This paper discussed education and sustainable development. with emphasis on the role of technology education in nation building, challenges of technology education in a developing nation and made recommendations such as the establishment of more schools and teacher training programs, among others, for a more functional education.Item Evaluation of Sectoral Implementation of the Nigerian National IT Policy(Social Science Research Network, USA,, 2014) Olatokun, W.M.; Abduldayan, F.J.The Nigerian National IT policy (USE IT) was formulated in March 2001 with sixteen sectoral application areas and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) was established as the implementation agency. Out of these sixteen sectoral applications, this study sought to determine the extent of implementation of t he policy in six sectors - health, agriculture, urban and rural development, arts, culture and tourism, national security and law enforcement as well as research and development. Ministries and agencies relevant to each sector were studied and the extent of implementation of the IT policy was evaluated. The study also assessed the newly drafted national ICT Policy to determine whether areas in the current national 11 policy that are yet to be satisfactorily implemented have been taken care of. The implementation of the national 11 policy in health, agriculture, Nigeria Police Force as well as in the research and development sector was adjudged very satisfactory, that of urban and rural development and Nigeria Immigration Service was seen as average; while it was adjudged unsatisfactory in Arts. Culture and Tourism sector. A review of the newly drafted national ICT policy revealed that some of the identified gaps in the current national IT policy had been incorporated to some extent while recommendations were made tor the other areas.Item The influence of Social Media on User Services in Academic Libraries. AkorThe purpose of this study is to find out the influence of social media on user services in Federal University of Technology, Minna. the paper discussed social cyber space where users access, communicate and contribute to the existing knowledge.Item Undergraduate Students’ Use of E-Resources in University Libraries in Niger State(Benue Journal of Library, Management and Information Science (BJLMIS), Makurdi, 2015) Oyedum, G.U; Chukwu, P.; Abduldayan, F.J.; Abedoh, G.O.Effective use of e-resources in university libraries is necessary for the academic development of students. This paper, therefore, assessed the relative effect of the available e-resources on undergraduate students' use of university libraries in Niger State. The study also ascertained the e-resources that made the greatest contribution to students' use of the libraries. A survey research design was used for the study, and the study population was 130 undergraduate students from Federal University of Technology, Minna, and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. The main instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The two libraries, as the study revealed, mainly subscribe to Science Direct for accessibility of e-resources. The study revealed that e-resources such as e-journals, bibliographic databases, e-books, e-databases, e-newspapers, and e-magazines, among others, were available in the university libraries studied. The study also revealed that, of all the available e-resources considered together, e-journals and bibliographic databases made the greatest contributions, which are significant to undergraduate students' use of the university libraries. To enhance the level of use of e-resources and the entire libraries by undergraduate students, the majority of the students indicated the need for the provision of stable network services, followed by an alternative power supply system and the provision of a regulatory body to govern the use of e-resources in the libraries.Item Problems and prospects of computer aided instruction in public primary schools in Niger State(Journal of Information, Education, Science and Technology (JOEST), 2015) Aniah, A.; Alabi, T. O.; Igwe, C. O.The paper examined the problems and prospects of Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) in public primary schools in Niger State. The advantages of CAI were raised in the paper while the problems militating against the success of the programme were also highlighted including cost of funding the programme, lack of training opportunities for teachers to be abreast with the techniques of modern technologies, absence of experts to operate the computers, electricity to power the media and time used to develop the software or packages were identified. However, the prospect of CAI to primary school education in Niger State will rest squarely on how the problems enumerated above are addressed. Recommendations were made for government to fund and also embark on massive computer training program, provide alternative source of energy to enhance smooth operation and application of CAI whenever the need arise, experts to maintain the computers, organize workshops and seminars to update teachers knowledge and also provide incentives to boost their moral including Public Private Partnership (PPP) for better CAI programme in primary school.Item Impact of e-Learning and open education resources on the teaching and learning of metalwork trades in technical colleges in Benue State, Nigeria(IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social Science (IOSR-JHSS), 2016) Nwokolo-Ojo, J.; Igwe, C. O.; Umar, I. Y.This study assessed the impact of e-learning and open education resources on the teaching and learning of metalwork trades in Technical Colleges in Benue State; Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design. A questionnaire with reliability coefficient of 0.83 was employed, and was distributed to metalwork trades teachers in the six technical colleges selected for the study in Benue State. Two research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. The subjects for the study comprised 100 technical teachers sampled using simple random sampling technique. Responses were analyzed using statisticalpackagefor social sciences (SPSS). It was found out that e-learning and open education resources for teaching and learning of metalwork trade courses are available in all the technical colleges. It was recommended that Government should ensure that all the tertiary institutions in the country where teachers are trained are provided with e- learning services such as computers connected to internet, multimedia projectors among others, this will make would be teachers to be e-learning compliant and that all the teachers of metalwork trade courses in Benue State technical colleges should be exposed to training and retraining programmes on the use of e-learning resources for effective teaching and learning of metalwork trade courses.Item Relevance of Multimedia and Hypermedia Instruction in Enhancing the Teaching and Learning of Industrial and Technology Education(Journal of Nigerian Association of Teachers of Technology (JONATT), 2016) Nwokolo-Ojo, J. O.; Igwe, C. O.; Puyate, S. T.The study investigates relevance of multimedia and hypermedia instructions in the teaching and learning of industrial and technology education. The study adopted descriptive survey design method. A total sample of 140 male and female technical teachers in 14 technical colleges in Benue State was selected out of the population of 280, using random sampling technique.30 items questionnaires was used to collect data for the study, with four point response options of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree and Strongly Disagree with corresponding scores of 4, 3, 2 and 1 respectively. The instrument was validated by three technical teachers from the Department of VTE, Benue State University, Makurdi. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Decision point was put at 2.50, implies that a mean rating of less than 2.50 is “Disagree” while a mean rating equal or above 2.50 is “Agree’. The findings revealed that through the use of multimedia and hypermedia helps student store and accessed easily. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that software for integrating multimedia and hypermedia content should be made available to various institututions and teachers must know how to access relevant multimedia content and share practice in the creation of content appropriate to every learning situation.Item Impart of Teachers’ Instructional Task Performance On Students’ Academic Achievement in Basic Technology in Secondary Schools in Gusau, Zamfara State.(Journal of Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, 2016) Igwe, C. O.; Nwokolo-Ojo, J. O.; Puyate, S. T.; Samuel, V. O.Teachers instructional task performance is a vital determinant of students’ academic achievement. Therefore, the creativity and innovative skills of the technology teachers in instructional delivery process impacts on the students’ academic performance. The study assessed the impact of teachers’ instructional task performance on students’ academic achievement in basic technology in secondary schools in Gusau, Zamfara State. Two research questions and one hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population consists of four principals, eight teachers and 120 students which gives a total of 132 respondents, sampled from government secondary schools in Gusau. 132 copies of structured questionnaires were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the basic technology lessons were not adequately and effectively delivered by teachers. Lack of conducive teaching and learning environment, inadequate instructional materials and effective utilization in teaching basic technology affected students’ academic achievement. From the findings, recommendations are that the government and stakeholders should ensure that only technical teachers are employed to teach basic technology and are periodically engaged in re-training programmes. Provide adequate and relevant teaching aids to facilitate the teaching and learning process in a conducive environment.Item Assessment of the Skill Acquisition Centers in Training Youths for self-Employment in Niger State(Benue State University Journal of Education (BSUJE), 2017) Igwe, C. O.; Abutu, F.; Gana, C. S.; Nwokolo-Ojo, J. C.; Mohammed, M. MThis paper assessed the effectiveness of skill acquisition centers in training youths for self-employment in Niger State. The study was a survey research in which data were collected with the use of a 30-item questionnaire on a population of 158 respondents purposively sampled from National Directorate of Employment (NDE) skill acquisition centers for youth in Minna, Suleja and Bida towns. The data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation on a 4-point scale, while z-test was used to test the null hypotheses at.05 level of probability. Findings of the study revealed that a number of programmes are put in place in skill acquisition centers but faced several challenges in terms of effective implementation. The study found that the small amount of salaries paid to master trainers plus the irregularities and delay in payment reduces motivation to teach skills; poor monitoring, supervision and pedagogical competence in terms of instructional delivery of skills; poor funding and misappropriation of training funds plus disregards to the needs of the informal sector: are among the major challenges faced by skill acquisition centers in training youth for self-employment in Niger State. The study recommended standardizing programme implementation operations and certification at skill acquisition centers and adequate funding of NDE youth training programmes at all levels of governance in Nigeria.Item Effects of mind Mapping Strategy on Achievement of Senior Secondary School Chemistry Students in Minna Metropolis(Nigerian Journal of Educational Philosophy (NJEP), 2017) Gana, C. S.; Nmamdu, R. K.; Ibrahim, W. D.; Igwe, C. O.Student in Minna Metropolis, Niger State. The research design employed was Quasi-Experimental design. Random Sampling Technique was used to select four senior secondary schools for the study intact classes with a sample size of 261 (179 male and 82 female) SS 11 Chemistry students was used. The research instruments used were the twenty items multiple-choice Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT) and Students Motivation Toward Chemistry Learning Questionnaire (SMTCLQ). The instruments were validated by experts. The instrument for data collection was CAT. The reliability coefficients of CAT was 0.81 using kuder Richardson (KR-21). Two research questions and two null hypotheses were raised for the study. Analysis of Covariance was employed in analyzing the data. The results showed that :( 1) students exposed to mind Mapping Instructional Strategy performed better than their counterpart that used conventional method; (11) there was no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students taught chemistry using Mind Mapping Instructional Strategy (MMIS). In conclusion Mind Mapping Strategy affects the student achievement positively. Therefore, it was recommended, among others, that Mind Mapping Strategy should be used in teaching chemistry at senior secondary schools.Item Adopting Economic Knowledge and Technology Driven Approach as a Means of Achieving Sustainable Economy(5th International Conference of School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE), 2017) Igwe, C. This paper examines the roles of economic knowledge and technology driven approach in achieving sustainable economy. It also considers the barriers to sustainable economy as well as the benefit derivable from a sustained economy. Saka, K.A.; Madaki, A.M.; Halima, T.; Saidu, A.A.The study investigated the use of innovative assessment techniques for students academic performance in information retrieval course. Documentary sources (Test scripts, quiz, and record of attendance, class participation as well as examination scripts and approved result) are /Sed to collect and analyze data. Simple tabulation and percentages were used to further analyze data. Results showed that students performed highly in continuous assessment. While the overall performance off students in the examination and the course was above average. It was further revealed that, to help student score A grade. 28 score B grade while C grade was obtained by 8 students. There was no failure in the course, It was concluded that student can be self-reliant after graduation. The study recommended that lecturer handling related courses should explore under innovative techniques to assess student's academic performance.Item Optimum Standard Needs of Graduates of Technical Colleges in Public Building Maintenance for Self-Reliance in Enugu State(Journal of Research in Entrepreneurship Development (JORED), 2018) Orji, K. C.; Igwe, C. O.; Onoh, B. C. EThis study aimed at determining the optimum standard needs of graduates of technical colleges in public building maintenance for self-reliance in Enugu State. Two research questions and two corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design with the population of 72 respondents (33 supervisors and 39 craftsmen obtained via pilot study) in Enugu State. The instrument for data collection was a structured 21-items questionnaire developed by the researchers. The instrument was validated by three research experts while the reliability index of 0.71 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha reliability estimate. Mean was used to answer the two research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics at .05 level of significance and appropriate degree of freedom. The result of the study revealed that; implementation of building maintenance law would guide and ensure optimum standards as it relates to material usage, maintenance attitudes of buildings owners and others; competent human resources capacity development would enhance maintenance of building defects like growth of fungus, deboning of finishes, rust staining, crack and falling of concrete. It was recommended that proper supervisory measures should be taking by building maintenance supervisors to ensure that buildings are maintained as stated by law. O.This paper discusses the efficiency of the industry via proper design curriculum, the curriculum are more responsible to industry needs and provide the students with employable skills and positive work values needed to meet the changing demands of industries and global environment. The existed methodology is based on basics and current trends of the domain these curriculums developed only theoretical knowledge they won’t get any industrial based exposure to overcome this issue, the proposed methodology is based on education and innovative in the industry, current trends in the job market are also considered while developing the syllables. The paper submits recommendations on further enhanced strategies that will help in the development of education in line with modern trends in curriculum issues.Item Comparative Analysis of Users’ Rating of the Management Information System Units of Three Universities in North Central Nigeria(African Journal of Computing & ICT, 2019-09) Daniel Ojonugwa Abutu; Fatimah Jibril Abduldayan; Maryam Lami Abdullahi; Aishat Haruna AbduldayanThis is a comparative analysis of users’ rating of the effectiveness of services provided by the management information system units of three selected Nigerian universities using certain parameters like structural layout, network equipment and security measures, bandwidth and latency, and users’ satisfaction. The selected universities were the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMIN), Baze University, Abuja (BAZEUNI) and University of Abuja (UNIABUJA). Each of these universities has Management Information System (MIS) units that are responsible for managing students’ academic records and personal details. The FUTMIN MIS is characterized by students complaints ranging from delay in connecting to the university network, incorrect students’ records, delay in staff response to queries amongst other. Students’ often wish that they were in other universities that were assumed to offer better services. This study therefore conducted a survey research using a structured questionnaire to gather data on the actual year of establishment of MIS, present composition of MIS users, network infrastructures, security measures, bandwidth and latency of the network, staff strength and area of expertise and future plans from Heads of Information Technology Services (ITS) units in charge of MIS as well as students who are users of the MIS services. Simple percentages and frequency counts were used to report the findings. It was revealed that FUTMIN MIS is not meeting the expectations of its users while BAZEUNI and UNIABUJA performed better at meeting the expectations of their users. The study recommended that FUTMIN ITS unit should organize training and workshop for technical staff, increase the number of ITS staff and network equipment and finally, source for funding from international agencies and donors.Item Mentoring, Knowledge Sharing, ICT Versatility as Influencing Factors on Research Productivity and Career Advancement of LIS Educators.(Zeh Communications, 2020) Babalola, G.A.; Uno, C.A.; Saidu, A.A.; Gana, Leah Yebo; Salubuyi, M.A.; Abubakar, U.The paper examined the importance of mentoring, knowledge sharing and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) versatility as influencing factors on the research productivity and career advancement of Library and Information Science (LIS) educators. The nexus among knowledge sharing, mentoring and ICT versatility as influencing factors on research productivity and career advancement of LIS educators was equally established. Promotion, career advancement and job progression of faculty including Library and Information Science (LIS) educators is usually hinged on their research productivity amongst other factors. In this digital age, the worth of an institution could easily be measured by accessing her productivity. The major currency that is well known in the digital economy is ICT. ICT versatility and proficiency will be a great advantage for all who possess it in the age. Sharing of knowledge could be horizontal, vertical and circular. With knowledge sharing comes inculcation of eye opening ideas, gems of doing things better, and creativity. A very useful platform where knowledge sharing and ICT versatility could serve as influencing tools to the research productivity and career advancement of LIS educators is mentoring. Mentoring is a way of showing others how things are done properly so that when the mentor is not around the mentees can act in the same way that their mentor would have acted. With proper mentoring, effective knowledge sharing would fall in line and if coupled with ICT versatility would under normal circumstances influence the research productivity and career advancement of LIS educators.Item Empowering LIS Educators with ICT skills for Creative and Innovative Knowledge Sharing in the Digital Age.(Zeh Communications, 2020) Babalola, G.A.; Gana, Leah Yebo; Udoudoh, S.J.; Saidu, A.A.; Uno, C.A.; Madaki, A.M.The rapidly evolving exigencies of the digital age are part of the compelling forces for all professionals including Library and Information Science (LIS) Educators to collaborate in terms of knowledge sharing rather than being islands to one another. Innovative and creative knowledge sharing coupled with Information and Communications Technology (ICT) proficiency would go a long way in not only empowering but in enhancing the productivity, the relevance and the profitability of LIS Educators in the digital age. The paper, therefore, examined how the possession of ICT skills coupled with creative and innovative knowledge sharing could serve as empowering and productive tools for LIS educators in the digital age. Issues that border on how ICT could improve creativity and innovation in knowledge sharing were also discussed. A nexus and the inextricable interplay among ICT Skills; Creativity; Innovation; Knowledge Sharing, and digital age were equally established. It was concluded that LIS educators would be empowered for optimum relevance, creativity and innovative knowledge sharing in the digital age, if they are proficient in the use of ICT. The paper recommended amongst others the need for paradigm shift from the traditional or orthodox practice of knowledge sharing to the evolving trends and best practices of knowledge sharing in the (rapidly changing world) digital age.Item Influence of Information Literacy Sckills on Information Seeking Behaviour of Rural Dwellers in Edu Local Government Area, Kwara State(The Information Technologist, 2020) Abduldayan, A.H; Abduldayan, F.J; Yelwa, I.M.This study examined effects of information literacy skills on the information seeking behaviour of w I dwellers in Edu Local Government Area (LOA). Kwara State The study aimed at finding the information sources available to the rural dwellers levels of satisfaction with the information sources available, level of information literacy skills and challenges that rural dwellers face m seeking information The selected rural areas were Lafiagi, Shonga and Tsaragi, which has a total population of 51 330 rural dwellers. Random sampling technique using the Krejcie and Morgan table arrived at a total sample of 374 from the three selected rural areas. Data was collected through structured questionnaire. The collected data was analysed using frequency counts and percentages. Findings of the study revealed that books, periodicals (newspaper, journals, magazine etc.), radio, television phones friends, market-square and religious centres are the information sources available to the rural dwellers while majority of the respondents were satisfied with the information sources available to them Furthermore, the level of information literacy skills of the respondent was high, [he study also found that non-awareness of mass literacy programmes, inaccessibility and unavailability of some information materials, ignorance about the use of library, and cost of information materials are the major challenges that rural dwellers faced while seeking for information. The study concluded that information literacy skills had effect on the information seeking behavior of rural dwellers and recommended that the state government, in conjunction with public library, should embark on mass literacy awareness programmes in the rural areas.
