    INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM (ILS) SKILLS OF LIBRARIANS FOR ACCESSIBILITY OF RESOURCES

    The aim of this research is to assess integrated library skills of librarians for accessibility of resources. An integrated library system (ILS), also known as a library management system (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. Many libraries are in the process of rethinking the effectiveness of the automation tools. They are using to provide library services, both within and outside of their library buildings. Internally, the core component driving many of these services has been the integrated library system (ILS). The next generations of these systems are called “library services platforms, a term coined by the consultant Marshall Breeding. The paper adopted conceptual approach. It determines the concept of ILS, Types of ILS, skills of integrated library systems of librarians, related studies, challenges of ILS, conclusions and recommendations. As libraries have moved increasingly to accommodate digital collections, they have found the ILS products unable to be reconfigured well enough to smoothly and efficiently handle the integration of all the workflows that are different, yet necessary, for both print and digital. In addition, the older ILS do not take advantage of the latest offerings in computing technologies and architectures particularly in the area of cloud computing. As technology continues to advance, the field of library and information science is evolving rapidly, and integrated library systems (ILS) of librarians need to keep up with the latest trends and technologies to remain competitive. Some of skills for ILS of librarians are; knowledge of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, big data analytics UX design, project management and digital preservation and curation.

    This paper reviews the skills used in archives and preservation of materials in the 21st century libraries and for librarians in the digital age. Libraries and librarians must consider and comprehend numerous aspects of services that have emerged since the advent of information and communication technology (ICT). Librarians of this era are required to use digital tools to provide electronic service. Librarians should possess a diversity of internet skills. Amidst the skills is online skills and technology, which is a useful tool for identifying job titles, tasks, and talents (including technology knowledge).The paper highlighted the 21st century skills for archives and preservation in libraries and for librarians such as management systems, content curation, taxonomy creation, records preservation and management, competitive intelligence tracking, digital asset management, skills in scanning and filing digital formats, automated archival collections, management systems, encoded archival description (EAD), XML schemas and USMARC. The paper gave challenges of acquiring the skills such as inadequate training, non-challant attitude of librarians towards the utilization of modern technologies and lack of internet connectivity. The paper concluded that Librarians should want to grow by studying current skills that will allow them to compete with other librarians from around the world. The paper gave the way forward such as regular training and retooling especially with the changing in technology and vast growth of knowledge and the provision of superb internet.

    Digital preservation Strategies in the Federal University Libraries in the North West Nigeria

    Digital preservation involves those activities that are carried out in libraries to protect their information resources that are born digital or those converted from analogue to digital form from loss and deterioration and to ensure long-term access to it despite the current changes in technology. This paper investigates the types of information resources digitized, the strategies used by the federal university libraries in North West Nigeria to preserve them so that they will remain accessible for use and reuse and the challenges facing it .Continuous access to digital information remain difficult even after they are preserved. A qualitative research method was adopted for the study; a purposive sampling technique was adopted and a structured interview was the instrument used to collect data for the study. The responses from the respondents were analyzed descriptively using tables. The result of the findings showed that theses, dissertations, preprint and post print journals are the common information resources digitise and preserved while refreshing and technology preservation are some of the strategies use , external hard drive is the storage media use . Erratic power is one of the challenges facing digital preservation. Based on the findings, the study concluded that digital preservation of information resources is carried out in the digitization unit of the libraries studied. Digitised resources are preserved in external hard discs, servers and most importantly in Institutional repositories. The paper recommended among others sensitization of Academic staff on the importance of uploading; normalization strategy should be adopted, proper maintenance of storage media should be adopted, use of cloud storage and adequate fund should be provided and policy should be developed

    The Role of Nigerian Library Association in Continuous Development of Librarians in Nigeria

    This paper reviews The Role of NLA in the Continuous Development of Librarians in Nigeria with specific focus on librarian and information profession. NLA has been in the forefront of the development of library profession in Nigeria. The objectives of NLA Includes; To unite persons interested in Libraries, Librarianship and Information services; To safeguard and promote the professional interests of librarians; To promote the establishment and development of libraries and information centre; The paper highlighted the factors that have promoted discussions of continuous professional development for librarianship which includes; the vast growth of new knowledge; introduction of new technology in libraries and an increasing highly educated populace. The paper also explained the thirteen special interest groups of the NLA currently in existence such as; Academics and Research Libraries (ARL) Association of Government Libraries (AGOL); Association of News Media Librarians of Nigeria (ANLON) to mention but a few. The paper explains the professional development as a lifelong learning and is indispensable for professional growth and instrumental for sustaining one’s competence. The library can also become more productive with new skills and knowledge acquired through professional development programmes. The paper further highlighted the various professional development programs put in place by librarians such as seminars, workshops, conferences, mentorship, courses, and distance learning programs with interactive capabilities. The paper discusses the importance of continuous development programs which includes to update knowledge and skills in existing and new areas of practice, keep professional qualifications up-to-date, raise one’s profile through certifications and networking, making oneself more marketable to future employers and obtain new improved skills-making challenging tasks easier. The paper highlighted the problems associated with attending professional development program which includes; lack of interest, unacceptance of submitted papers and lack of awareness.

    This paper reviewed the application of Information Technology (IT) in knowledge Management: A global perspective. Information Technology (IT) has become a potent force in transforming social, economic, and political life globally. Without its incorporation into the information age, there is little chance for countries or regions to develop. Knowledge is considered a valuable asset to organizations. Effective knowledge management is an increasing important source of competitive advantage and a key to success of contemporary organizations, bolstering the collective expertise of its employees and partners. This paper establishes the role of IT in sharing, transferring and storing of information. Knowledge is very important especially for document management, storage, search and knowledge sharing to improve organizational effectiveness. Knowledge management without IT is useless for competitive ends. The paper also listed the three (3) categories of knowledge management technology such as groupware software, work flow system and content management system. The paper highlighted the characteristics of knowledge which include; knowledge is personal, knowledge is highly experiential, procedural and propositional. The paper gave the role of IT in knowledge management and information technology tools. The paper gave the implication of the role of IT in knowledge management that before developing an IT strategy, firms must develop a knowledge strategy to provide the basis for the IT strategy, not the other way round. Conclusions and recommendations were also provided

    Application of ICT in Digital Preservation Strategies in Academic Libraries

    Facilitating teaching, learning and research is the major role of academic libraries, to do so effectively libraries rely on documented information resources born either as print or digital. The paper highlighted the various strategies employed by academic libraries in digital preservation of their scholarly publications by the application of the appropriate information and communication technologies. Identified strategies for digital preservation by academic libraries as highlighted by this paper include the followings, investment strategies,short-time and long-time strategies. The study identified the re-use of ICT, especially the software component play a vital role in the digitization and preservation of scholarly publications. The paper went further to highlight the technical know-how and the ICT requirements in the digitization and preservation of scholarly publications which includes among others, identifying the items to be digitized, pulling them into loose sheets and digitize, ICT requirements highlighted includes scanners, digital cameras, use of Abbyyfine reader and uploading the items to Dspace. In conclusion, digitization and preservation of scholarly publications has to deal not only with the maintenance of files but also ways of keeping them accessible bearing in mind the current trends in technology
