Libraries and librarians must consider and comprehend numerous aspects of services that have emerged since the advent of information and communication technology (ICT). Librarians of this era are required to use digital tools to provide electronic service. Librarians should possess a diversity of internet skills. Amidst the skills is online skills and technology, which is a useful tool for identifying job titles, tasks, and talents (including technology knowledge).The paper highlighted the 21st century skills for archives and preservation in libraries and for librarians such as management systems, content curation, taxonomy creation, records preservation and management, competitive intelligence tracking, digital asset management, skills in scanning and filing digital formats, automated archival collections, management systems, encoded archival description (EAD), XML schemas and USMARC. The paper gave challenges of acquiring the skills such as inadequate training, non-challant attitude of librarians towards the utilization of modern technologies and lack of internet connectivity. The paper concluded that Librarians should want to grow by studying current skills that will allow them to compete with other librarians from around the world. The paper gave the way forward such as regular training and retooling especially with the changing in technology and vast growth of knowledge and the provision of superb internet.Item The Fate of Intermediary Library Staff in the Era of ICTs in Nigerian context(National Association of Library and Information Science Educators (NALISE), 2014-04-21) Abdulkarim, Murjanatu; Ukashatu, Hamza; Goshie, Rhoda WusaThe paper explained how the traditional or analogue libraries have transformed into a digital library with the advent of information and communication technologies (ICTS). The concept of ICT based on libraries were highlighted as electronic library, virtual library, digital library, community library, library without walls, the library of the future etc, ICT facilities available for the library and information center were also provided such as computers, printers, email, UPS, CDROMs, Scanners, Printers, Satellites, Internet, Intranet, connectivity, V-SAT, online databases, Websites, etc and the advantage of using them were highlighted such as provision of remote access information to users and access to unlimited information from different source. Challenges of ICT in the library were also highlighted such as; lack of adequately trained manpower in the use of IT. The service provided by library and information with ICT was also provided such as remote enquiry services, interactive services, catalog on web, the services of the intermediates or paraprofessional staff may not be undermined, because they are also very important in the modern-day library. They assist the professional staff in the library such as register users online, transform the physical form of catalog into the online public access catalogue (OPAC), answering users queries online, charging and discharging and giving online literacy instructions to users as part of digital reference service. Also, the paper concludes that, intermediary library staff must acquire all the requisite skill through training and retraining for capacity building in the area of ICTs in the library.Item Application of Information Technology in Knowledge Management: A Global Perspective(Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Nigeria., 2021-12) Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jimada, Aisha; Abdulkarim, MurjanatuThis paper reviewed the application of Information Technology (IT) in knowledge Management: A global perspective. Information Technology (IT) has become a potent force in transforming social, economic, and political life globally. Without its incorporation into the information age, there is little chance for countries or regions to develop. Knowledge is considered a valuable asset to organizations. Effective knowledge management is an increasing important source of competitive advantage and a key to success of contemporary organizations, bolstering the collective expertise of its employees and partners. This paper establishes the role of IT in sharing, transferring and storing of information. Knowledge is very important especially for document management, storage, search and knowledge sharing to improve organizational effectiveness. Knowledge management without IT is useless for competitive ends. The paper also listed the three (3) categories of knowledge management technology such as groupware software, work flow system and content management system. The paper highlighted the characteristics of knowledge which include; knowledge is personal, knowledge is highly experiential, procedural and propositional. The paper gave the role of IT in knowledge management and information technology tools. The paper gave the implication of the role of IT in knowledge management that before developing an IT strategy, firms must develop a knowledge strategy to provide the basis for the IT strategy, not the other way round. Conclusions and recommendations were also provided
