Item Library Personnel Commitment on Preservation Practice of Library Resources in Academic Libraries in Niger State,(A Publication of Depaprtment of Librarya and Information Science Maddona University 1 Madonna University Road P.M.B 05 Elele, Rivers State Nigeria., 2024-01-01) Abubakar, Fati, G.O. Alegbeleye and Owolabi, R .O.Library personnel commitment to preservation of library resources continue to decline despite many efforts by the library management to provide effective and efficient resources to the library users. This could be attributed to the poor attitude and lack of commitment exhibited by the library personnel to preservation practice of library resources in academic libraries. Few empirical work exists to support the commitment of library personnel to the preservations of library resources but it is not apparent that a study in Niger State, Nigeria as addressed the Library personnel commitment to preservation of library resources. This study examines commitment of library personnel on preservation of information resources in academic libraries in Niger State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. A total enumeration technique was used for selecting 387 academic librarian as respondents for the study. Questionnaire was used for data collection and was analysed using descriptive statistics. The finding revealed that the result shows a grand mean of (𝑥 = 2.88, SD =0.772) on a scale of 4-pointLikert-type scale. This implies that the librarians in Niger State practice preservation methods. However, there is still room for improvement on the methods of preservation as the threshold has not been reached. On the other hand, the result indicates a high level of commitment of library personnel to preservation practices in academic libraries in Niger State (𝑥 = 2.95, SD = 0.634) on a scale of 4-point Likert-type. Commitment of library personnel was divided into three dimensions namely affective commitment, continuance commitment, and normative commitment. Library personnel commitment indicators: continuance commitment (β = 0.257, t(311) = 3.097, p < 0.05) positively and significantly influenced preservation practices of information resources, while affective commitment (β = 0.104, t(311)= 1.447, p > 0.05) and normative commitment (β = 0.030, t(311) = 0.361, p > 0.05).Item REVITALIZING ENTREPRENEURSHIP STUDIES IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE EDUCATION FOR JOB CREATION AND POVERTY ERADICATION IN NIGERIA(A PUBLICATION OF EBONYI STATE CHAPTER OF THE NIGERIAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (NLA), 2021-06-18) ADAMU, MOHAMMED SABA (CLN, MNLA, CTN), DOGARA, LADAN (CLN), ABUBAKAR, FATI (CLN), AHMED, YABAGI (CLN)This paper examined revitalization of entrepreneurship studies in Library and Information Science (LIS) education for job creation and poverty eradication in Nigeria. Revitalization of entrepreneurship studies in LIS education that would be amenable to the profession is not only a necessity but mandatory if the prospective LIS graduates would be employers of labour rather than job seekers in a competitive 21st century. The introduction of entrepreneurship studies in Nigerian universities since 2004 is a laudable step despite the fact that facilities for skills acquisition are generally lacking in most institutions. In furtherance of this laudable intention, stakeholders in LIS have also seen the need for integrating entrepreneurship studies in LIS education which has recently led to the proposal for a course known as “Infopreneurship” to be included in LIS undergraduate education programme. Training of LIS students in entrepreneurship requires some skills such as information technology skills, information literacy skills, managerial skills and personal entrepreneurship skills. Opportunities for LIS professionals were also highlighted to include: book publishing, information brokerage, consultancy services, bookselling business, record management, indexing and abstracting services, system analyst, operation of business centres, cybercafé business, editorial services, authoring books, email publishing, web publishing, desktop publishing, establishing and maintaining libraries for organisations, compilation of directories, compilation of bibliographies etcetera. It is recommended that to make entrepreneurship studies attractive, government ought to create favourable environment in terms of infrastructure provision, funding and regulating interest rates on bank loans for interested graduates that would wish to be self-employed after graduation.Item Availability, sufficiency and use of school library resources by students: a case study of Police Secondary School Library, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria(The Nigerian School Library Association., 2018-10-29) Mohammed Saba Adamu, J. Joel Kolo, Alice Adebisi & Fati AbubakarThis study investigated the availability, sufficiency and use of library resources by secondary school students in Police Secondary School (PSS) Minna Library. The research design adopted for this study was descriptive survey research method. The population of the study consisted of Senior Secondary two (SS2) and Senior Secondary three (SS3). A total of eighty (80) copies of the questionnaire were distributed and seventy-seven (77) were returned and used. The instruments used for data collection were observation checklist containing items on availability of information resources and questionnaire containing items on sufficiency and use of information resources by students; factors militating against the use of information and strategies to enhance use of information resources. Data collected were analysed using frequencies and percentages. Findings showed that computer assisted instructional resources were not available and as such could not be determined whether sufficient or not, only few students make effective use of school library. It gave the concept of an academic discipline or field of study as a branch of knowledge, taught and researched as part of higher education by the university faculties and learned societies to which they belong and the academic journals in which they publish research. Information- seeking behavior on the other hand is a more specific concept of information behavior. It specifically focuses on searching, finding, and retrieving information. An integrated library system (ILS), also known as a library management system (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. Many libraries are in the process of rethinking the effectiveness of the automation tools. They are using to provide library services, both within and outside of their library buildings. Internally, the core component driving many of these services has been the integrated library system (ILS). The next generations of these systems are called “library services platforms, a term coined by the consultant Marshall Breeding. The paper adopted conceptual approach. It determines the concept of ILS, Types of ILS, skills of integrated library systems of librarians, related studies, challenges of ILS, conclusions and recommendations. As libraries have moved increasingly to accommodate digital collections, they have found the ILS products unable to be reconfigured well enough to smoothly and efficiently handle the integration of all the workflows that are different, yet necessary, for both print and digital. In addition, the older ILS do not take advantage of the latest offerings in computing technologies and architectures particularly in the area of cloud computing. As technology continues to advance, the field of library and information science is evolving rapidly, and integrated library systems (ILS) of librarians need to keep up with the latest trends and technologies to remain competitive. Online information seeking behavior is a relatively new phenomenon. However, it is the active process of obtaining data from the Web. Libraries and Universities are continuously adapting and seeking effective ways to respond to the fundamental and interconnected missions of research, teaching and community service, and that is why some have embraced the use of the Internet in service delivery. On the other hand, this study is more concerned with maximizing usage of this resource by students in fulfilling their primary aim of research and reaching out to these resources on the Internet using the requisite navigational skills. The paper says the Internet offers widespread access to electronic resources and also has the advantages of interactivity, and information tailoring. It also agrees that access is inequitable and use is hindered by navigational challenges due to numerous factors e.g. disorganization, technical language and lack of permanence. Meager information evaluation skills add to students' vulnerability. The paper highlights some information seeking models to assist students in their search for information on the Internet. Also it highlights the role of the library in the information seeking process of students. The paper concludes that though Information and communication technologies are being put in place for use by students, they must possess the requisite skill to use them appropriately.Item Utilization of Internet as a Communication Media among Postgraduate Students of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria.(International Organization of Scientific Research Community of Researcher, 2014-06) Suleiman, Hussaini; Abdulrahim, Abdulfatah; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jimoh, Amina; Musa, Hayatu MuhammadThis research work was carried out to determine the Utilization of Internet as a Communication Media among Postgraduate Students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The population of the study is the postgraduate students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Survey method of the research and stratified random sampling was used for the study to select 550 postgraduate students for the study. However, 502 respondents responded to the questionnaires distributed. The data was presented and analyzed in tables and percentages. The research discovered that majority of the postgraduate students use internet services for their academic programs. It also reveals that utilization of internet has positive impact on postgraduate students and also has influenced the accessibility of online information usage of postgraduate students in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Libraries and librarians must consider and comprehend numerous aspects of services that have emerged since the advent of information and communication technology (ICT). Librarians of this era are required to use digital tools to provide electronic service. Librarians should possess a diversity of internet skills. Amidst the skills is online skills and technology, which is a useful tool for identifying job titles, tasks, and talents (including technology knowledge).The paper highlighted the 21st century skills for archives and preservation in libraries and for librarians such as management systems, content curation, taxonomy creation, records preservation and management, competitive intelligence tracking, digital asset management, skills in scanning and filing digital formats, automated archival collections, management systems, encoded archival description (EAD), XML schemas and USMARC. The paper gave challenges of acquiring the skills such as inadequate training, non-challant attitude of librarians towards the utilization of modern technologies and lack of internet connectivity. The paper concluded that Librarians should want to grow by studying current skills that will allow them to compete with other librarians from around the world. The paper gave the way forward such as regular training and retooling especially with the changing in technology and vast growth of knowledge and the provision of superb internet.Item Digital preservation Strategies in the Federal University Libraries in the North West Nigeria(Kenya Library and Information Science Consortium (KLISC), 2022-05-25) Jimada, Aisha; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jibril, Attahiru AlhassanDigital preservation involves those activities that are carried out in libraries to protect their information resources that are born digital or those converted from analogue to digital form from loss and deterioration and to ensure long-term access to it despite the current changes in technology. This paper investigates the types of information resources digitized, the strategies used by the federal university libraries in North West Nigeria to preserve them so that they will remain accessible for use and reuse and the challenges facing it .Continuous access to digital information remain difficult even after they are preserved. A qualitative research method was adopted for the study; a purposive sampling technique was adopted and a structured interview was the instrument used to collect data for the study. The responses from the respondents were analyzed descriptively using tables. The result of the findings showed that theses, dissertations, preprint and post print journals are the common information resources digitise and preserved while refreshing and technology preservation are some of the strategies use , external hard drive is the storage media use . Erratic power is one of the challenges facing digital preservation. Based on the findings, the study concluded that digital preservation of information resources is carried out in the digitization unit of the libraries studied. Digitised resources are preserved in external hard discs, servers and most importantly in Institutional repositories. NLA has been in the forefront of the development of library profession in Nigeria. The objectives of NLA Includes; To unite persons interested in Libraries, Librarianship and Information services; To safeguard and promote the professional interests of librarians; To promote the establishment and development of libraries and information centre; The paper highlighted the factors that have promoted discussions of continuous professional development for librarianship which includes; the vast growth of new knowledge; introduction of new technology in libraries and an increasing highly educated populace. The paper also explained the thirteen special interest groups of the NLA currently in existence such as; Academics and Research Libraries (ARL) Association of Government Libraries (AGOL); Association of News Media Librarians of Nigeria (ANLON) to mention but a few. The paper explains the professional development as a lifelong learning and is indispensable for professional growth and instrumental for sustaining one’s competence. The library can also become more productive with new skills and knowledge acquired through professional development programmes. The paper further highlighted the various professional development programs put in place by librarians such as seminars, workshops, conferences, mentorship, courses, and distance learning programs with interactive capabilities. The paper discusses the importance of continuous development programs which includes to update knowledge and skills in existing and new areas of practice, keep professional qualifications up-to-date, raise one’s profile through certifications and networking, making oneself more marketable to future employers and obtain new improved skills-making challenging tasks easier. The paper highlighted the problems associated with attending professional development program which includes; lack of interest, unacceptance of submitted papers and lack of awareness.
