Item Approaches to Security of Information Resources in Academic Libraries in Niger State, Nigeria(Samaru Journal of Information Studies, 2018-04-16) Fati Abubakar & Dr. B. S. AdukuThis study examines approaches to security of information resources in academic libraries in Niger State. Three research objectives were framed for the study. The case study design was adopted for the study, and purposive sampling technique was used to select 35 respondents from a population of 297 staff in all the 12 academic libraries in Niger State. Semi structured interview guides were used to collect data from respondents, while field notes guide were used to record data in respect of participants’ observation. The data collected were subjected to qualitative analysis. The findings revealed that: the common approaches adopted for the security of information resources included periodic random checks on users and staff, scheduled patrols, and checking of users IDs, while computers of some libraries had antivirus software installed, and passwords configured. However, surveillance cameras were functional in only one library. The prevalent threats in all the libraries included book theft, mutilation of information resources, and non-return of borrowed library materials, impersonation, and computer virus attack. The 12 libraries had policies guiding the security of information resources, but they did not have insurance cover. It was concluded that although academic libraries in Niger State have adopted good approaches for securing their information resources. The fact that they paid more emphasis on printed materials, with less use of electronic security systems, it is obvious that the libraries were yet to embrace the opportunities offered by technological advancement for such activities. In view of the findings, it was recommended that libraries should endeavour to have written policies on all aspects of security of information resources, while efforts should be made to improve the qualities of such materials that have already been degraded or replace them if necessary. Finally, it would be necessary to enhance the manual methods of safeguarding library materials, while emphasis should gradually shift to the electronic methods.Item Assessment of Customer Satisfaction with Products and Services of Academic Libraries in Zaria Metropolis(Academic Library and Information Science, 2015-09) Denen, Nehemiah Kwaghgba; Matthew, Terfa Chorun; Goshie, Rhoda WusaThis paper discusses customer satisfaction with products and services of academic libraries in Zaria metropolis. The products include books, internet access, journals, databases, newspapers and magazines and so on. The libraries comprise of Kashim Ibrahim Library of Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Federal college of Education, Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic and Ameer Shehu College of Advance studies Libraries all in Zaria Metropolis. Survey method was adopted for the research. The population was 377 respondents. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Tables, frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data. It was found out that customers of these libraries are satisfied with the products and services of the academic libraries in Zaria metropolis.Item Wealth Creation for the Nigerian Youths and Sustainable National Economic Development in Nigeria through Entrepreneurship and Information and Communication Technology(The Humanities Complex, A.B.U. Nigeria, 2012-11-19) IKyembe, Princess; Akuso, Afiniki; Goshie, Rhoda WusaWealth Creation for the Nigerian Youths and Sustainable National Economic Development in Nigeria through Entrepreneurship and Information and Communication Technology As Nigeria marks her fifty-two years of independence, ‘ this giant of Africa’ with a population of over 140 million, is blessed with abundant mineral, material, human, and financial resources. With many of these resources yet untapped, there are numerous challenges confronting the nation which include abject poverty, low standard of living, low rate of economic growth, corruption, insecurity, unemployment, over- dependence on petroleum products and foreign goods and inadequate power supply, among others. The present state of insecurity and incidence of petty and serious crimes in the country has direct bearing on the issue of unemployment among the youths in Nigeria. In order to tackle these problems, certain programs and policies have been adopted by successive governments. These include National Economic Empowerment Development Strategies (NEEDS), Nigeria Bank for Commerce and Industries (NBC), National Directorate of Employment( NDE), National Economic Reconstruction Fund( NERFUND), Poverty Eradication Program, Small- Scale Industry Scheme (SSIS), Structural Adjustment Program (SAP). Operation Feed the Nation (OFN), Green Revolution (GR), State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEED), Local Empowerment Development Strategy (LEEDS), Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED), and Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin), among others. This paper therefore examines the role of Entrepreneurship and Information and Communication Technology in wealth creation for the Nigeria youths towards enhancing a sustainable national economic development. Entrepreneurship and Information and Communication Technology can provide a platform for inculcating the necessary skills, innovative abilities and creative capabilities in youths which should prepare them to function well in business and become self- reliant and employers of labor. The paper therefore recommends that government should create enabling environment for foreign investment, transform agricultural sector, provide adequate power supply, encourage indigenous entrepreneurs to expand their markets in order to employ youths, revive textiles and other manufacturing industries and strengthen the existing ones’ and also take proactive measures on the issues of insecurity as well as provide affordable ICT infrastructural facilities to run business centre. If these are properly put in place, the paper stresses an affordable and enabling environment would have been created for both the indigenous and foreign investors to make Nigeria their destination thereby creating more jobs for the teeming youths.Item Library Resources for the Visually Handicapped in Kaduna State: A Case study of Kaduna North Local Government Area(Faculty of Education and Extension Services, Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto. Nigeria, 2018-02) Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jimada, Aisha; Hassan, Hadizatu; Adedokun, Aderonke Olubukola; Shehu, KokamiThe research work was on library resources for the visually handicapped in Kaduna state. The work gave the definition of a handicapped as individuals who lack and have a defective functioning of any body part. It also listed the categories of physical disabilities which include: visual disabilities, hearing disabilities, mental health disabilities and intellectual disabilities. It also listed the library resources which include: Braille embossers, braille alphabets, braille duplicators and braille audio. Literature were reviewed based on the topic of study. A questionnaire containing 7 (seven) items were designed and used for the study. Interviews were also conducted for the school librarian, staff and the students using an interview guide. Results of findings revealed that the library resources for the visually handicapped are not current and are not also sufficient for the students due to majorly lack of funds. Recommendations such as the provision of funds and the training of the staff and students on how to access the various library resources to be able to meet with the challenges of this twenty first century in librarianship were given.Item Information Service Provision for the Sustenance of the 21st century Educational Development in Nigeria(School of Science and Technology Education, Federal University Of Technology Minna, Niger State. The paper identified the significance of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in knowledge Management (KM) to organizational effectiveness.Item Factors Influencing Attitude of Teacher Librarians Toward Information Technology in Kaduna State(Ahmadu Bello University Library Complex, A.B.U. Zaria. Nigeria, 2015) Gwari, Williams Habiba; Esew, Micheal; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jimada, AishaThe study aimed at examining the factors that influence the attitude of teacher librarians toward information technology in Kaduna State Secondary Schools. Survey research method was adopted. The study population comprises all the five hundred and four (504) schools. Out of this population two hundred and sixty- four (264) was used as sample size for the study. Questionnaire was the instruments used for data collection. The data collected were presented and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that teacher librarians have positive attitude toward information technology as shown from the respondents who opined that information technology can enhance student learning. The study also found that the possible constraints which tend to have unanimous consensus among the respondents were inadequate trainings on the job, lack of access to technology, poor infrastructure/ social facilities and the epileptic power supply which adversely limit use of the technologies in secondary schools. The inferential analysis showed that the constraints to information technology usage in the secondary schools are positively correlated with the attitude of the teacher librarians towards the information technology use for teaching and learning in the schools. The study concluded that inadequacy of information technology resources, lack of confidence, anxiety, inadequate training, and lack of access to technology, poor infrastructure/ social facilities and epileptic power supply were some of the constraints that significantly influence the teacher librarians’ attitude towards information technology usage in the schools.Item gender participation of academic librarians in provision of library and information services in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library of Federal University of Technology, Minna and Abubakar Gimba Library of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai(2019-07-28) ADAMU, MOHAMMED SABA; ANGO, ABUBAKAR ALIYU; ABUBAKAR, FATI and DOGARA, LADANThis study investigated equal gender participation of academic librarians in provision of library and information services in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library of Federal University of Technology, Minna and Abubakar Gimba Library of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. These universities were chosen based on their status (i.e. Federal and State owned institutions). Objectives of the study were to: identify the types of library and information services provided in the university libraries and find out if there was equal gender participation of academic librarians in the provision of library and information services in the university libraries in Niger State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The entire forty-two (42) academic librarians in the two (2) university libraries were used as the respondents in the study. Questionnaire was the instrument used for the collection of data. The data collected were tabulated and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation. The findings revealed that exhibition, display and counselling services were not provided and there is no equal gender participation of academic librarians in the provision of library and information services in the two university libraries under study. The study recommended that management of the two university libraries should also provide exhibition, display and counselling services and should be gender conscious in the subsequent employment of librarians in order to balance the gender equality of academic librarians in the two (2) university libraries under study.
