A Publication of School of Science and Science Education Federal University of Technology, Minna, 2021-12-31) Musa Imam SHEKARAU, Fati ABUBAKAR & MUSA HussainiThe paper examined the purpose for which medical doctors utilised health information resources. The study adopted quantitative research methodology and used survey research design to achieve the stated objective raised. The population for the study comprises 182 medical doctors. A total of 116 doctors were selected using multi stage sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, while the data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics using frequency counts, Percentages and mean. The findings from study revealed that majority of the respondents’ utilized textbooks more than the other sources of health information. Majority of the medical doctors reported that they used these information sources for health diagnosis, disease conditions to mention but a few. The study concluded that because of the busy nature of the respondents jobs, a number of strategies that would assist to increase the use of the preferred health information sources, depending on their individual choice such as setting up mobile libraries would not be a bad idea. Mobile apps that contain the types of information available would also help bring this health information straight to the palm of the doctors. The researchers therefore recommended among others the need to set up libraries and provide adequate information resources to these libraries in order to provide the needed information to the medical doctors; further in service training of medical doctors, - and provision of hospital libraries with ICT facilities and current information sources for better services.Item Access to and Use of Electronic Journals in Selected Federal University Libraries in the Federal Capital Territory and North Central Zone of Nigeria(African Journal ofLibrary, Archives and Information Science, 2015) Salau, Sadiat Adetoro; Gama, Umar G.The study investigated the extent of access and use of electronic journals by the academic staff of federal universities in North Central Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory from the different E-journal sources available. The study adopted the quantitative research methodology and used cross sectional survey research design. Findings from the study revealed that personal access through open/free source was the most used source of e-journals for their academic activities. Ejournals were also most frequently used in academic activities related with research and teaching. No statistically significant difference was established between demographic variables and the most used source of access of E-journals (open/free access) and also the extent of use for academic activities. The study recommended that academic libraries take advantage of the open access policies of some publishers and databases to add to their e-journal holdings. Nigerian Library Association should organise more training and workshops for librarians on E-resources search and retrieval skills; modules should include effective search strategies, designing appropriate metadata and subject headings to enable easy retrieval. In addition, university libraries should retrieve usage statistics that follows recognised standards (such as COUNTER’s (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources) Code of Practice) and mined data from the publishers or distributors of E-Journals to assess their e-journal services.Item An Evaluation of Undergraduates Use of E-Books: A Case of Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria(International Research: Journal of Library & Information Science, 2014-12-21) Salau, SadiatThe study evaluated the use of E-books by the undergraduates of Federal University ofTechnology, Minna. The study used survey research design and was guided by five researchquestions. A total of 500 undergraduates from the different schools were sampled. The datacollected was analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings from the study revealed thatmost of the undergraduates of Federal University of Technology, Minna are aware of Ebooks and preferred it to print books mainly because of ebooks portability and durability.They also used E-books gotten through GOOGLE than the University Library E-books.Item Influence of academic social networking sites on research productivity of library and information science lecturers in Nigerian universities(Library and Information Perspectives and Research, 2024) Hussaini Musa; Fati Abubakar; Augustine Edimeh; Hajara Jibril; Khadiza Avosuahi O Sadiku; Musa Imam Shakarau; Ladan Dogara; Mustapha Gana Abdulkadir; Murjanatu Abduhamid JibboThis paper is an overview of the influence of academic social networking sites and management policy on research productivity of library and information science lecturers in Nigerian universities which was anchored on two specific objectives. The paper examined issues relating to the influences of the use of academic social networking sites on research productivity of lecturers identified include: management of an online persona, diffusion of studies, collaboration, information management, and measurement of impact. outcomes of the study showed the influence of management policy on lecturers’ research productivity to thus include: organisation’s research objectives; decentralization; leadership; support for research; policy regimes to motivate lecturers' research activities; and resources. It uses the conceptual and documentary method by using the various related literature to achieve the two stated objectives. Based on the identified factors, the paper recommends the LIS Lecturers commitment to utlisation of academic social networking sites for research visibility and formulation of management timely review of university policies on research productivity of the lecturers among others. The paper conclude that academic social networking sites and university management policies impact research output by LIS lecturers, influencing visibility and encouraging research. And recommends creating social environments that are appropriate for academic purposes networking sites and implementing management policies to make research output more visible. Academic staff should actively utilize academic social networking for research productivity, acquiring necessary ICT and information literacy skills. Kpakiko, Hashimu Suleiman, Fati AbubakarPurpose: This paper looked at the extent Current Awareness Services have influenced the use and access to information resources by the users of university libraries in North-Western Nigeria. Design/Methodology/Approach: Descriptive survey research approach was used. A Sample of library users from three university libraries in North West Nigeria was used. Copies of the Questionnaires were administered on the library users (students and staff) to collect data on the awareness and use of current awareness services in the library. The data collected were analyzed using table and simple percentage calculation. Findings: It was found that, users visit the library daily in order to read, carryout research and update their knowledge. Again, list of new arrivals, shelve display, library bulletin newspaper and email and bulletin board services were the most available current awareness services in the library and mostly used. Implication: The paper suggested for the adoption of digital technologies in university libraries that will enhance timely distribution of information needs of the users. The study therefore, encourages the library users and to acquire ICT skills that will enable them adequately utilize digital current awareness service tools. Originality/Value: The originality of this study is found in its perspective on the need to give more publicity and awareness. Therefore, email and mobile SMS services should be introduced that will distribute current information to library users on time.Item Perceived Influence of ICT and Work Environmental Productivity of Library Personnel in Colleges of Education in Niger State, Nigeria(A Publication of the University Library, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2023-06-24) DOGARA Ladan, ABUBAKAR Fati, ANGO Abubakar Aliyu, AKAWULami, YUSUF Ladan Fatima, ADAMU Mohammed SabaThis study investigated the perceived influence of Information Communication Technology and the work environment on the productivity of library personnel in college education libraries in Niger State, Nigeria. Four research objectives guided the study. A descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprised one hundred and two (102) library personnel in the two colleges of education libraries in Niger State, Nigeria. A close-ended structured questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument. Mean, and standard deviation were statistical tools used for data analysis. Findings showed that the level of productivity is low, the perceived influence of ICT is moderate, and the perceived influence of the work environment of library personnel in colleges of education libraries in Niger State, Nigeria is moderate. The study concluded that the low level of productivity of library personnel could be attributed to a poor working environment and a lack of application of ICT in library operations. The study recommended that the Management of colleges of education in Niger State, Nigeria, should make their libraries more conducive and comfortable for both staff and users, provide more opportunities for ICT training of staff, provide alternative electricity power supply, adequate provision of ICT facilities in their libraries for effective application of ICTs in library operations, provide good lighting system, adequate spaces and furniture and good ventilation system in their libraries for better productivity.Item Efficient Customer Service: A necessary skill for a proactive, responsive and relevant 21st century librarian.(A Publication of Nigerian Library Association, Benue Branch, 2018-12-15) Goshie, R. W., Abubakar, Fati., & Jibril, H.The purpose of this paper is to sensitize librarians on contemporary realities and the importance of inhibiting the principles of efficient customer service in dealing with library customers as a strategic tool in ensuring that librarians remain proactive, responsive and relevant in the ever-changing information landscape. Literature reviewed brought to the fore issues and trends that are challenging the conventional roles of librarians in the 21st century such as transition to digital content, computer that is almost replacing librarians’ roles, and others. Possible solutions were carefully articulated such as provision of librarians with the requisite technological literacy needed for a 21st century library service. The paper concluded with the remark that, regardless of changes in technology which has adversely affected the library’s capacity, and the dynamic change in information seeking behavior of our users which has redefined the concept of service provision, by cultivating and displaying the outlined skills for efficient customer service, library remains relevant and the role of librarians in the digital age indispensable.Item Preservation of Information Resources in Academic Libraries in Niger State, Nigeria(Benue Journal of Library, Management and Information Science (BJLMIS) A publication of NLA Benues, 2018-12-18) Fati Abubakar, Musa Imam Shekarau & Murjanatu AbdulhamidThis study investigated preservation of information of resources in academic libraries in Niger State, Nigeria. A case study design was adopted for the research. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 35 respondents from a population of 297 library staff in all the twelve academic libraries in Niger State. Semi structured interview guides were used to collect data from respondents, while field notes guide was used to record data in respect of respondents responses. The instruments used for the study were questionnaire and interview. Data collected were tabulated and analysed using simple frequencies and percentages. Findings revealed that the common methods of preservation of information resources in academic libraries in Niger State included repairs, binding and environmental control. The findings also showed that there were policies guiding the operations of the academic libraries in Niger State, but they did not have insurance covers. In respect of effectiveness of the methods in use, the findings showed that repairs, binding, environmental control was effective in all the academic libraries. The fact that the academic libraries in Niger State paid more emphasis on printed materials, with less use of digital preservation methods and electronic systems, indicated that the libraries were yet to embrace the opportunities offered by technological advancement for such activities. In view of the findings, it was recommended that libraries should endeavour to have written laws on all aspects of preservation of information resources, upgrade and maintain facilities such as binderies air conditioning systems, fire prevention equipment etc, including the adoption of digital preservation methods. etc. information ResourcesItem CUSTOMERS' INTENSION TO CHANGE MOBILE COMMUNICATION NETWORKS REGARDING QUALITY OF INFORMATION SERVICES PROVISION IN ZARIA METROPOLIS(I-manager's mobile Applications and Technologies, 2019-01) Hassan, Hadizatu; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; JImada, Aisha; Oyewumi, Roseline; Amata, SadiyaThe study was undertaken to determine customers' intension to change mobile communication networks regarding quality of information services provision in Zaria metropolis. The study raised three research questions and answers were sought to them, among which are the types of information services provided by mobile communication network to customers in Zaria metropolis, customers satisfaction level, and their intension to change network providers regarding information service quality. Survey research method was adopted for the study and data was collected from the sample of 1,269 out of the total population study of 1534. The data were analyzed descriptively using frequency tables, percentage, mean, and mode. The study revealed that customers in Zaria metropolis are provided with a wide range of information services. It was also revealed that customers are partially satisfied with the overall services of call, SMS, Internet, and SIM card service in the entire networks. Entrepreneurship is a veritable tool for the achievement of inclusive growth and consequently sustainable development. In order to reduce unemployment and create jobs opportunity for Sustainable National Economic Development, Federal Government introduced some programmes such as NPower., Youth Empowerment and Development Initiative (YEDI), Start-up Nigeria 2019, Trader Money, African Youth Empowerment of Nigeria (AYEN) e.t.c. The paper examines the role of Information and Communication Technology in job creation, sustainable national economic development and wealth creation. The paper concluded and recommended that entrepreneurship development leads to economic development, job creativity, economic sustainability, individual self reliance, improved standard of living better awareness and practice. For a proper and sustainable entrepreneurship development Federal Government and indeed other tiers of government in Nigeria should provide the enabling environment for the activities of entrepreneurs like provision of infrastructures, enacting and formulating of laws and policies that will aid entrepreneurship development in the country.
